Unveiling of the Hector/Scottish Pioneers Monument in 1923

Today (15 September 2023) marks the 250th anniversary of the arrival of the ship "Hector" in Pictou, Nova Scotia, with early Scottish immigrants.

A huge crowd gathered at Pictou’s Market Square on 17 July 1923 to witness the unveiling of the Hector/Scottish Pioneers Monument by Baron Byng of Vimy, Governor General of Canada.

The bronze statue was sculpted by New Glasgow’s John Wilson and depicts a kilted figure with a musket in one hand and a powder horn swung over one shoulder and an axe over the other.

The monument will be rededicated today at 2 pm.
